Newcastle Airport — Smart Airport Blueprint

Newcastle Airport needed a forward-looking technology strategy to move beyond traditional airport operations and embrace smart city principles. The challenge was to design a coherent blueprint integrating diverse emerging technologies — from IoT sensors and video analytics to autonomous vehicles and AI — into a unified, phased smart airport vision that could serve both the airport and the broader Hunter region.

• ✓Conducted a smart city technology assessment relevant to airport operations, covering IoT, AI/ML, connectivity, and data platform capabilities
• ✓Designed a comprehensive Smart Airport Blueprint covering passenger experience, security, retail, operations, and green airport initiatives
• ✓Developed a Hunter Regional Data Platform concept to position Newcastle Airport as a regional data hub connecting airport and community data assets
• ✓Mapped smart technology use cases across key airport domains: smart parking, terminal video analytics and wayfinding, connected aircraft, autonomous vehicles and runway inspection, and building energy management
• ✓Incorporated AI/machine learning for security, predictive maintenance, and operational efficiency — alongside LPWAN and high-speed wireless connectivity architecture
• ✓Framed a phased implementation roadmap aligned to the airport's growth and digital maturity
